Many people who start looking into building their custom dream home find the process daunting, overwhelming, and stressful. That makes sense: it's a big deal! Building your custom home is one of the biggest investments you'll ever make. But it can be a lot easier. Here are two quick tips on how not to have your dream turn into a nightmare.

Pick the right builder.

One of the first things we do at Dotty Brothers is to meet with our clients to find out if we are a good match. Building a custom dream home is a long process. We'll be working with each other for about a year. And over that time, we'll need to make sure our core values align well. Throughout the building process, we are going to face surprises. We will have good times and bad as the build goes on. Sometimes things move quickly, sometimes they move slowly. We will be flexible with you as you make selections, and we will also be loyal to you and your vision for your dream home. For Dotty Brothers, honesty and transparency are at the core of our values. If we know from the beginning that our core values are aligned, we'll have an easier time working through the project. Ultimately, you have the final decision on choosing a builder. If your core values align with your builder's values, it will be a good fit. (Obviously, we think you should pick Dotty Brothers!)

Do a little homework in advance.

There are lots of things you can do to get the design/build process started. For starters, thinking your dream home through and getting a visual that represents it. You've thought and dreamt about it, so start collecting examples of what you imagine your dream home will be like. Some examples may include: What sort of layout you like, professional-style kitchen, bathrooms that feel like a spa, wrap-around porch, or decks overlooking crystal waters. How do you imagine the interiors? Flooring, kitchen island, breakfast nook, cabinets, wall finishes, unique architectural feature, a family crest you'd like to incorporate. Just start collecting examples of what you like. You can do it old-school by looking through magazines and tearing out images to create a scrap book, but a lot of our clients start by looking through Pinterest.

Pinterest is a simple way to start collecting photos and ideas that help express your vision, and you can save them to a dedicated board on your profile. The ideas you collect start creating a concept, helping you shape your vision for your dream home. It also helps us better understand what you like, so we meet your expectations. Knowing your own likes and dislikes from the start and sharing them with us streamlines the design process, helps with decision-making, and creates excitement as the images you've collected come to life right in front of your eyes.
